Writing, Los Angeles and Traveling the World

Writing

I write Fantasy and Science Fiction, short stories and books. Currently I am in hot pursuit of pro publication for my short stories. The big project is a seven book fantasy series that has taken over my brain, and my life. The main characters cornered me one night and insisted that I tell their story. It wasn’t their sharp swords that convinced me, but the determined look on their faces. This is truly a story I need to tell and I ask the Spirits for the ability to do it justice.

Next week I’m going to WorldCon Renovation in Reno. This is my first time attending and I’m finding too many things I want to do at one time. I will be posting as regularly as possible to keep you up to date on events there.

Los Angeles – The City of Angels

You know all of those nasty things people say about Los Angeles? Well, some of them are true. There will certainly be days you’ll hear me complain about traffic and that idiot that cut me off, or worse yet, cut in front of me and then drove really slow. Grr. But there are also a lot of great things here. I plan to give you my take on both the good and the bad and everything in-between.

Traveling the World

When the opportunity arises, I like to travel to places that are as different from home as possible. I’ve been to (in order): Europe, Eritrea, Egypt, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mexico and China. I travel on a tight budget, no fancy hotels and tours, but a Lonely Planet guide book in one hand and a sense of adventure in my heart.

I am currently deciding where I want to go next year. Indonesia is looking good, but I still need to research Malaysia and Cambodia. If you have any input, I would be glad to hear it. I guarantee that when I start following the Wanderer’s Compass, I will bring you along. We’ll have all sorts of fun together.

Have fun at Worldcon. Still so bummed I had to cancel my trip there. Chicago is the host city next year, not sure I will get out there then either. I have never been to one and really want to check it out. So make sure you keep me updated so I can live through you. 🙂

Having characters persuade you with words instead of swords? Luxury.
    Awesome blog! 😉

Thanks, Foste. I won’t say their hands might not have been resting on the hilts of their swords, but they were never drawn.

Burkina Faso–you totally made that name up, admit it! 🙂

And the capitol of Burkina Faso is Ouagadougou – pronounced wa-ga-doo-goo. No kidding.

Oh, you’ve been to Egypt? Where in Egypt? I was born there and go every year.

In 1998 I went to Cairo and Giza (of course). Then I went down to Dahab. It turned into my first solo trip when the person I was supposed to meet there changed plans. I didn’t really know how to travel well then. I could’ve seen so much more. But I learned a lot on that trip. It was also only a few months after my grandmother died and I think I didn’t have the gusto I might have another time. I’m sure I will make it back sometime. When I do, I’ll be asking you for all the coolest places to go. 😉

Thanks. I’m going to post twice a week for sure, three times when I’m inspired. Glad you like it.

What part of Europe did you visit? I’ve never been able to travel but perhaps someday…though my reasons and tastes are pretty different. Most of the places I want to go are, I suppose, not that different from home or unique, but I want to visit them because I love them culturally and/or have specific things I want to see. The British Isles, Germany and Japan are at the top of my list. I want to search the Black Forest for gingerbread houses and visit Hamelin. I’d love to see Egypt too, but I don’t think I’d go there under current circumstances even if I had the means and most of Africa is just not as appealing or interesting to me as Europe and Southeast Asia.

And of course, you know all about me and my characters 😉

My high school band toured Europe. We gave performances as we went. I visited France, Austria, Switzerland and Germany. I liked it, but I was also at that stupid teenager stage, and since no one in my family had ever been out of the country, they couldn’t tell me anything about how to appreciate a place more. But the Europe trip is probably what made me desire places more exotic. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with enjoying anywhere. We all have different reasons for traveling. Whatever gets you going is all that matters.
